PhD in NESE Viva Voce Announcement: Congratulations to Mr Ng Yi Sheng (PEG2211001)
The School is pleased to announce that Mr Ng Yi Sheng (PEG2211001) from Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in New Energy Science and Engineering has passed his viva voce with Minor Correction held on 19th June 2026.
Yi Sheng defended his PhD thesis "Study of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Mechanisms and Descriptors on 2D Borophene and Honeycomb Materials: First-Principles Calculation and Descriptor Design" or "⼆维硼烯与蜂窝材料析氢反应机理与描述符的研究：第⼀性原理计算与描述符设计" under the supervision of Prof Dr. Zheng Jincheng and co-supervised by Prof Dr. Wang Huiqiong & Prof. Dr Ong Wee Jun. His work has been published in several SCI-indexed journal:

Mr. Ng Yi Sheng enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in New Energy Science and Engineering (NESE) programme in November 2022. Throughout his candidature, he has demonstrated commendable dedication and perseverance in conducting his research while meeting the University's academic milestones.
He submitted his PhD thesis on 6 January 2026, successfully passed the Pre-Viva Voce examination on 16 January 2026, and subsequently passed the external thesis evaluation in March 2026. Following this, his thesis successfully completed the thesis quality check and review by the XMU Main Campus in May 2026.
Mr. Ng Yi Sheng's successful completion of the PhD Viva Voce Examination marks another important milestone for the School, as he becomes the third PhD graduate from the SECE - New Energy Science and Engineering (NESE) programme to successfully pass the PhD Viva Voce Examination.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Ng Yi Sheng and Prof Zheng Jincheng and his team on reaching this significant milestone. We wish him every success in his upcoming Final Viva Voce Examination and are confident that he will perform with excellence.
