Chemical Engineering Students Learn More about Palm Oil Industry
The 4th IChemE Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) University Roadshow was successfully organized by XMUM IChemE Student Chapter on 6 November 2019 in conjunction with Love my Palm Oil campaign. A program initiated by IChemE POPSIG and Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), it aims to enable knowledge transfer, exchange of best practices and sharing experience to all that are interested in the palm oil industry.
A series of talks by speakers from IChemE, MPOC, Dia-Chemical Sdn. Bhd. and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia were delivered in the event. Prof. Chen Binghui, Dean of the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, started the Roadshow with a welcoming speech, in which he highlighted the importance of the palm oil industry in Malaysia.
Later, Mr. Mohd Muslimin Hashim from MPOC and Ir. Dr. Chong Mei Fong from Dia-Chemical Sdn. Bhd. shared their opinions on the truth about palm oil from health and nutrition perspectives, as well as the needs and role of Chemical Engineers in the palm oil industry. This was followed by a panel discussion led by Ir. Kim Kek Seong along with Dr. Tan Khang Wei and Dr. Tan Jian Ping from the programme of Chemical Engineering.
The event closed with an introduction to the Student Ambassador Programme by Mr. Mohd Muslimin, as well as the 22 students who had volunteered to represent Xiamen University Malaysia.
On 13 November 2019, 38 students visited KLK-Kepong Oleomas Sdn. Bhd. at Pulau Indah, Port Klang, which was the second session of the Roadshow. The plant tour is conducted by Ir. Dr. Calvin Chok Vui Soon, Technology Manager for the oleochemical plant. Three faculty members from XMUM Chemical Engineering Programme - Dr. Kua Yin Leng, Dr. Yong Wai Fen and Dr. Tan Khang Wei accompanied the students to the site as their supervisors.
