Engineering the Future: Mastering New Energy Science and Engineering

In Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), the Master in New Energy Science and Engineering is a full research mode programme offered with the focus of energy related disciplines such as energy novel materials design, optimization and applications. This programme is designed to develop an in-depth understanding of recent developments in emerging energy materials and their applications, particularly with respect to the following disciplines:

  • Catalysis
  • Solar energy research
  • Electrochemical energy storage research
  • Piezoelectric energy research
  • Energy materials simulation research 
  • Wave energy research
  • Building-integrated photovoltaic, urban flows, heat and mass transfer, turbulence simulation research
  • Petroleum chemical energy research
  • Life cycle assessment, solid waste management, energy optimization research
  • Low dimensional photonics and plasmonics, physical modelling of urban systems research
  • Renewable and sustainable energy research

Bridging Theory and Practice: Hands-On Training in Energy Technology

The programme provides practical training in an array of energy technology modules, such as energy materials/devices fabrication, and materials characterization techniques, aiming to develop knowledge of the fundamental principles of chemistry, physics and engineering that underpins commercially important energy applications.  Students have access to fully-equipped modern research laboratories and instrumentation in a multidisciplinary research-centric environment. Students have the opportunity to gain an array of interdisciplinary fundamental knowledge and practical skills, developed through specialist lectures, workshops, research seminars, and hands-on laboratory and analytical experience.

The PEOs are to produce graduates who: -

  1. Graduates will be able to apply technical knowledge and practical skills to solve research problems associated with energy science and engineering context.
  2. Graduates will be committed to work independently to deliver practical solution to research problems and be a good decision maker with strong communication skills.
  3. Graduates continue to acquire mastery of knowledge in pursuing lifelong learning and generating innovative scientific and engineering solutions by adhering to environmental, ethical, and integrity to fulfill social responsibility.

At the end of the programme, graduates are able to:

  1. Knowledge and Understanding - Demonstrate specialized technical knowledge in new energy science and engineering field of research.
  2. Cognitive Skills - Identify, analyze and solve scientific problems critically using the principles of science and engineering within energy domains.
  3. Practical Skills - Apply practical skills through relevant simulations, and/or experimental approaches to perform research in energy related fields of study.
  4. Interpersonal Skills - Work together and collaboratively with peers and other groups as a part of team undertaking a range of different roles in accomplishing the research tasks.
  5. Communication Skills - Effectively communicate by defending original research in scientific writing and in oral presentation
  6. Digital Skills - Competently apply a wide range of adequate digital technologies and software to enhance study and research findings.
  7. Numeracy Skills - Interpret the scientific analyses, findings and research outputs effectively using quantitative and/or statistical tools.
  8. Leadership, Autonomy and Responsibility - Responsibly perform research task in planning and managing work within a timely manner.
  9. Personal Skills - Exemplify self-awareness with the current development, innovations and academic opportunities through continuous academic development
  10. Entrepreneurial Skills - Establish and/or initiate the entrepreneurial ventures into the potential research project in the energy related field of study.
  11. Ethics and Professionalism - Appraise ethical, environmental value and integrity in research for career advancement
