PhD in NESE Pre-Viva Voce (PV) Announcement Outcome - Mr Ng Yi Sheng (PEG2211001)

The School is pleased to announce that Mr Ng Yi Sheng (PEG2211001), a PhD candidate in New Energy Science and Engineering, has successfully passed his Pre-Viva Voce (PV) held on 16th January 2026.

 

Ng defended his doctoral thesis "Study of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Mechanisms and Descriptors on 2D Borophene and Honeycomb Materials: First-Principles Calculation and Descriptor Design" or "⼆维硼烯与蜂窝材料析氢反应机理与描述符的研究:第⼀性原理计算与描述符设计" under the supervision of Prof Dr. Zheng Jincheng and co-supervised by Prof Dr. Wang Huiqiong & Prof. Dr Ong Wee Jun. His work has been published in several SCI-indexed journal:

 

 

The Pre-Viva Voce examination panel comprised internal faculty members from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering (SECE), School of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (SAIR), and School of Mathematics and Physics (SMP), as listed below:

  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr Gan Wee Chen - SECE

  4. Assoc. Prof. Dr Haw Choon Yian - SECE

Following this successful PV, Mr Ng will proceed to external thesis evaluation, after which he shall conduct a final viva voce upon receipt of the external examiners’ reports. His thesis has already passed the thesis quality check and review by the Main Campus in December 2025, in accordance with the stipulated XMU academic standards and quality requirements.

 

We wish Mr Ng Yi Sheng a smooth and successful upcoming PhD thesis evaluation process. SECE and NPAC remain committed to ensuring the quality of postgraduate candidates and to maintaining full compliance with the policies and standards of the Postgraduate Studies Unit of XMUM and Graduate School of XMU, MOHE and Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
