First XMU-XMUM Electrochemistry Summer School Held in Malaysia

The first Xiamen University (XMU) - Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) Electrochemistry Summer School was held at XMUM from 29 to 31 July 2025.

This event was organized by the China-Malaysia Institute for International Advanced Studies (CMIIAS), XMUM, the State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces (PCOSS), and XMU's College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

A feast of lectures, laboratory training, and academic discussions, the summer school aimed to strengthen collaboration in electrochemistry research and education between the two universities and the region.

Since 2009, the XMU Electrochemistry Summer School has offered courses covering fundamental theory, research methods, and applications in the field, as a training platform for young researchers in China.

The opening ceremony on 29 July was attended by Prof. Jiang Yunbao, Dean of CMIIAS; Dr. Zhang Ying, Vice President of XMUM; Prof. Ren Bin, Dean of XMU's College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Prof. Huang Nay Ming and Prof. Wang Xiang, co-chairs of the summer school committee; and Prof. Zhang Hongliang.

During the summer school, nine XMU professors delivered lectures on topics including electrochemical energy conversion, energy storage, photoelectronic materials, in-situ characterization, and the use of artificial intelligence in research.

Laboratory sessions included six experiments such as cyclic voltammetry, platinum hydrolysis adsorption, rotating ring-disk electrode, PEM electrolysis for hydrogen production, electrochemical Raman spectroscopy, and computational electrochemistry. Instructors provided guidance combining theory and practical work.

Participants also took part in a friendly badminton match to encourage informal interaction.

Future editions of the summer school are expected to further strengthen collaboration between XMU and XMUM in electrochemistry research and education.
