Chemical Engineering Students Visit ISF to Enhance Industry Understanding
On 23 May 2025, a group of 26 Chemical Engineering students from Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) visited Intercontinental Specialty Fats (ISF) Sdn. Bhd. in Dengkil as part of the CME443 Oils and Fats Technology course. The visit was organised by the XMUM-IChemE Student Chapter and led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Kua Yin Leng, the course convener.
ISF Sdn. Bhd. is a company involved in the production of specialty fats and oils for the food industry. Established in 1980, it operates in more than 50 countries across six continents.
During the visit, students attended a briefing on palm oil refining and modification processes, including fractionation, hydrogenation, and interesterification. This was followed by a guided tour of the production facilities, where students were able to observe industrial operations relevant to their course content.
After the visit, students submitted video-based process evaluations as part of their coursework, which were reviewed by ISF staff. This activity contributed to the course outcomes related to complex engineering problem-solving (WP6). Transportation for the visit was provided by XMUM.
The XMUM-IChemE Student Chapter is a student-led body registered with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Established in 2018, it supports activities that connect academic learning with practical exposure to chemical engineering practices.
