Cardiff-XMUM Joint Conference 2025 Concludes
The Cardiff-XMUM Joint Conference 2025 on Sustainable Energy and Climate Challenge (SECC) was successfully held from 25 to 26 October 2025, at Xiamen University Malaysia.
The event was jointly hosted by Cardiff University and XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering (SECE), and chaired by Prof. Omer Rana from Cardiff University, and Prof. Huang Nay Ming, the Deputy Dean of from SECE.

A convergence of ideas, innovation, and collaboration, the two-day conference aimed to unite minds under one hopeful mission: to co-create solutions for a low-carbon and equitable future. It brought together 25 keynote speakers, 5 industry leaders, and delegates from 10 countries and 20 institutions.

The opening ceremony on 25 October was led by Prof. Wang Hui-Qiong, Assistant President of XMUM; Prof. Rudolf Allemann, Vice President of Cardiff University; as well as Prof. Omer Rana and Prof. Huang Nay Ming.
The conference featured several plenary speakers, including Prof. Lee Pooi See, Vice President (International Engagement), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Prof. Yang Yong, Distinguished Professor, Xiamen University, China; Prof. Li Jian-Feng, Distinguished Professor, Xiamen University, China; Prof. Ning Yan, Director of the Hydrogen Research Institute, National University of Singapore; and Ms. María Cortés Puch, Vice President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

The conference comprised four thematic tracks on Environment and Climate Science, Bioenergy and Clean Fuels, Energy Storage and Battery Technology, and Energy Materials. Each session provided a platform for participants to share the latest developments in sustainable energy and climate research.
In addition to academic presentations, participants also joined networking activities, including a conference gala dinner that encouraged collaboration and informal exchange.
The Cardiff-XMUM Joint Conference 2025 concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening research, innovation, and education in sustainable energy. The event strengthened the partnership between Cardiff University, Xiamen University Malaysia, and regional collaborators.
