Studying Chemical Engineering as an undergraduate at XMUM has been an enriching journey. The program's comprehensive curriculum and hands-on approach in engineering software utilization have equipped me with practical skills and theoretical knowledge crucial for my internship in an engineering consulting firm. I seamlessly applied P&ID knowledge learned in CME103 Chemical Engineering Drawing class to real-world projects. Looking forward to leverage on other available facilities such as SIPP to enhance my competency. Grateful to meet many helpful lecturers and fellow course mates who supported me along the way!

Throughout my two years in XMUM, I enjoy studying with all my course mates and lecturers. The courses and facilities prepared me to be adaptable to the near future. Several clubs and student chapters are available for students to cultivate our interpersonal relations while pursuing academic excellence. I am grateful to everyone in XMUM for enriching my study life.

The Capstone course ignited my passion for chemistry and engineering, revealing the captivating fusion of these disciplines. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Kua and the dedicated teaching staff for enriching my learning journey. Being part of the Capstone experience has granted me invaluable knowledge and skills, and I'm honored to have contributed. Four years ago, I was hesitant and scared to come to Xiamen University Malaysia, but now I would like to thank myself for having the courage to do so. The study life here is full of challenges and unknowns, where I can be fully exposed to the unique humanities and landscapes of Malaysia, where I can challenge the famous international competitions, and where I can fully understand and get in touch with the knowledge and research of chemical engineering.

In my journey at Xiamen University Malaysia, I've learned key principles that shaped my success. I valued teamwork over going it alone, combined hard work with smart strategies, and held onto unwavering self-belief. Taking care of my mental and physical well-being ensured I approached my studies with a clear mind. Whenever faced with challenges, I remained resilient, knowing that personal limits are often self-imposed. These values led to consistent academic achievements, including making the dean's list frequently and recently winning the CEUC UM Technical Case Study competition, proving my determination.

I am Tan Willy, a second-year Chemical Engineering undergraduate in XMUM. I am driven by my passion for exploring the world of science and engineering. I thrive on solving challenges and find immense pride in overcoming obstacles. Joining XMUM was an easy decision with its 100% scholarship, vibrant campus life, top-notch lab facilities, and the guidance of professional supervisors and lecturers. Here, I am not just studying CME—I am shaping a future where I can make positive impacts on society and the environment.

My undergraduate journey at SECE, XMUM, proved transformative, furnishing me with robust foundations and invaluable research exposure. A pivotal milestone was the publication in the esteemed journal SusMat (Impact Factor: 28.4, Q1), for which I owe immense gratitude to Prof. Dr. Wee-Jun Ong. Now, as a Master and PhD candidate, I eagerly anticipate delving deeper into the horizon of new energy. With his guidance, I’m ready to contribute significantly. Reflecting on the past fills me with gratitude, while looking ahead to the future at Xiamen University Malaysia ignites my enthusiasm.

My postgraduate journey began in March of 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Ong Wee Jun, with my main focus being the utilization of carbon nitrides for solar-driven applications. As one of the awardees of the Green Talent Award 2022, I had the privilege being a visiting PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Colloid and Interface Science, Germany. This was a great opportunity to network and get to know enthusiastic and passionate researchers in photocatalytic research. All-in-all, my PhD was a difficult but rewarding experience, with my greatest takeaway being the importance of resourcefulness and perseverance. I will look back fondly at these memories in my future endeavours.
 

As a PhD research student at Xiamen University Malaysia, I delve into the captivating realm of nanomaterials and photocatalysis. Guided by Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun, I collaborate with esteemed colleagues like Sue-Faye Ng, whose work on low-dimensional carbon nitride-based nanostructures and sustainable energy inspires me. International conferences in Vietnam provide a platform for exchanging ideas with fellow researchers, as we uncover the mysteries of solar-powered chemistry for a greener future.
