CME Postgraduate Wins First Place at Black Soldier Fly Larvae Cultivation and Its Application Challenge Competition
The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Chew Zhi Ling, a postgraduate student under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Kua Yin Leng from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia, on winning the 1st Place at BSF Larvae Cultivation and Its Application Challenge Competition with a cash prize of RM 1,000.
The larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF) species are known for their high protein content and have enormous potential to be utilised as an alternative animal feed, particularly for fish and poultry.
This competition was held during the BSF Farming Workshop, which was held by Green Guardians in collaboration with ATOZ Carbon Cycle on 4 May 2024. Participants were required to submit two videos: The first video, themed “Cultivation of BSF Larvae”, should present the introduction, objectives, housing setup, feeding regimen, and overall cultivation practices; while the second video themed “Utilization of BSF Larvae” was evaluated based on the growth stages, challenges faced, utilization strategy, and objective achievement.
Chew Zhi Ling said: “This award would not have been possible without Dr. Kua Yin Leng’s invitation and contribution. The workshop was interesting, allowing me to learn about BSF farming basics, its important role in a circular economy, and sustainable food systems. I enjoyed the cultivation journey of BSF together with Dr. Kua to witness the growth from larvae to prepupae, pupae and adult flies. I look forward to more exciting and fruitful research experiences at XMUM.”
