About Me

Prof. Thomas Choong obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.  He was appointed as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Xiamen University Malaysia in 2026, following his retirement from Universiti Putra Malaysia, where he served for approximately 30 years.  He has been recognized among the World’s Top 2% Scientists from 2022 to 2025. He is a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, a Chartered Engineer UK, and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers UK, and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia.

  • PhD (Chemical Engineering) , University of Cambridge, 2000

  • Master in Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 1996

  • Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 1991

  • Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (BEM)

  • Chartered Engineer (ECUK)

  • Fellow, IChemE UK

  • Fellow, IEM

  • Chemistry Subject Committee Advisor of the Unified Curriculum Committee for Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary School (MICSS) Working Committee.

  • Editorial Board Member of Processes (MDPI)

Research Interest

Prof. Thomas research interests centre on process modelling and simulation, spanning pressure swing adsorption and, more recently, computational fluid dynamics (CFD). I employ CFD to study the behaviour of complex systems, including electric vehicle fire dynamics, with a focus on safety and performance. I also conduct research on functional nanomaterials, particularly nano-sized calcium peroxide (CaO₂), investigating its synthesis, surface modification, and controlled-release properties for environmental remediation and sustainable agriculture. In the area of sustainable energy, my work encompasses waste heat recovery and energy storage technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency and supporting decarbonisation in industrial processes. In addition, I am engaged in biofuel research, contributing to the development of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
